Psilokastro is today a small, nearly deserted settlement with a rich history from its Ottoman heritage and refugee memories to its rare natural landscapes, ideal for exploration and walking. Ιt is located about 3 km from Nikiforos, at an altitude of approximately 260 meters, on the southeastern slope of Mount Megalovouni. It lies about 26 km southwest of Paranesti and 18 km east-northeast of Drama. It belongs to the Municipal Unit of Nikiforos, in the Municipality of Paranesti. Together with Ano Pyxari, Gyras, and Teichos, it forms the Local Community of Ano Pyxari. The village was formerly known as Malkalar or Kelli Malkalar during the Ottoman period. In 1919, it was annexed to the Greek state as Zarits(part of the former community of Nikiforos), and in 1927 it was renamed Psilokastron, and later, in 1940, Ypsilokastron. In 1923, following the Asia Minor Catastrophe, the Muslim inhabitants relocated, and 40 refugee families(152 individuals) settled in the area. The refugees who came from the Caucasus originated from the village of Bagdat, coming from the regions of Trabzon and Chaldia. The few residents who remain today are mainly engaged in agriculture and livestock farming.
