Το Schonengrud ανήκει στο καντόνι του Appenzell Ausserrhoden της Ελβετίας. Βρίσκεται στους πρόποδες του Hamm και ο πληθυσμός δεν ξεπερνά τους 600. Η ιστορία του χωριού είναι συνδεδεμένη με την κλωστοϋφαντουργία   και το κέντημα, όταν αυτά αναπτύχθηκαν στην περιοχή τον 18ο αιώνα. Μάλιστα από τις αρχές του 19ου το χωριό διέθετε κλωστικές μηχανές και απασχολούσε το μισό και πάνω πληθυσμό του στον κλάδο της υφαντουργίας. Κατά την επίσκεψη εδώ μπορεί κάποιος να δει εργοστάσια, υφαντουργία, καλοδιατηρημένους ξενώνες από την εποχή της ακμής τους. Μέχρι τις αρχές του 20ου αιώνα ήταν κέντρο παραγωγής υφασμάτων, που τροφοδοτούσε πολλά μέρη του κόσμου, όλα αυτά μέχρι το 1931. Σήμερα η κύρια ενασχόληση είναι η γεωργία - κτηνοτροφία. Λόγω θέσης, είναι εύκολη από εδώ η πρόσβαση στα γύρω βουνά, προσελκύει πολλούς τουρίστες. Το χειμώνα για σκι κατάβασης, σκι αντοχής και σνόουμπορντ. Ενώ το καλοκαίρι για πεζοπορία στα γύρω μονοπάτια.

In winter, visitors flock to the area for downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, and snowboarding, while in the summer, the region attracts hikers looking to explore the scenic trails.
