The Assistens Kirkegård, located in the Nørrebro district of Copenhagen, is the most famous and perhaps the most beloved cemetery in Denmark. Although it has been in use since the mid-18th century, today it no longer feels like a typical burial ground. It is a place where history, culture, and nature come together, and it forms an active part of the daily life of the city’s residents. It was founded in 1760, at a time when the older cemeteries within the city walls could no longer meet the growing needs of Copenhagen. From early on, notable figures of Danish society were buried there, but its reputation as a “cemetery of the famous” truly flourished in the 19th century, during a period of great artistic and intellectual growth in the city. The Assistens feels more like a quiet park than a cemetery. Locals come here for walks, cycling, or picnics, while the tall trees and green spaces create a peaceful atmosphere. Unlike the strict, monumental cemeteries found in other European cities, Assistens is welcoming and “alive,” with paths winding through old graves, sculptures, and memorials, almost like an open-air museum where nature and history meet. Assistens is known worldwide because it is the resting place of some of Denmark’s most important figures, including: Hans Christian Andersen, the world-famous fairy-tale author. Søren Kierkegaard, the influential philosopher and theologian. Niels Bohr, the Nobel-prize winning physicist. Christen Købke, a major painter of Denmark’s “Golden Age.” There are also many other artists, poets, politicians, and intellectuals buried here. In total, the cemetery contains thousands of old graves, many of which are considered cultural monuments. The Assistens is also home to a small museum, the Herman Stilling Museum, which displays works and archival material related to the artistic history of the country. The space often inspires artists and photographers, and guided tours are regularly organized to present the history of the cemetery and the lives of the people buried there
