A hiking route that winds around and through the interior of the 16th-century Venetian Castle of Assos in Kefalonia offers a truly unique experience combining history, nature, and breathtaking views. The massive fortress sits atop a hill at an altitude of 170 meters, and although the ascent may be a bit tiring, it is well worth the effort. The castle is built on a narrow peninsula that juts out into the Ionian Sea, in the northwestern part of the island, near the picturesque village of Assos, about 40 kilometers from the capital, Argostoli. The total length of the castle walls is about 3,000 meters, enclosing an area of approximately 440,000 square meters. Despite its current state of abandonment, hiking within and around the castle transports visitors to a different time and era. The trail begins in the village and leads through charming footpaths and olive groves covering a distance of 1 to 2 kilometers depending on the starting point. It is a moderate-level hike, offering hikers the opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty of the area, with lush Mediterranean vegetation and wild landscapes. The view of the beautiful village of Assos and the turquoise waters of the Ionian Sea rewards all who choose to explore it on foot. During the ascent, visitors can explore the imposing walls and fortifications dating back to the 16th century, as well as the ruins of old buildings and churches within the castle grounds. From the top, the panoramic view over the Ionian Sea and the village of Assos is simply breathtaking and unforgettable. The best time for this hike is in spring and autumn, when the weather is mild and ideal for outdoor exploration. Hiking in the Castle of Assos is perfect for those who love history and nature, offering a unique journey to one of Kefalonia’s most scenic and historic landmarks far from the crowds.
