Vámos, a traditional village in Chania, is a beautiful and picturesque place that impresses every visitor. Walking through the village, from one cobbled alley to another, takes you back to another era. In the 19th century, Vámos was the capital of the Sfakia region. Under the administration of Ioannis Savvas Pasha (1885-1887) a Greek Christian, civil engineer, and doctor from Ioannina who served as an official of the Ottoman Empire during the reign of Abdul Hamid the village experienced significant development. During his tenure, several public buildings were constructed, shaping the settlement. One notable example is the "Higher Girls' School," whose construction began in 1880 and was completed in 1886. This school trained female teachers who, in turn, spread knowledge and the ideals of freedom to the children of the then-occupied Crete. The village's growth is also reflected in the luxurious mansions(known as konakia) of the wealthy, which contrast with the simple, arched houses(kamarospita) of the less fortunate. All buildings were constructed using local materials such as stone, wood, and clay, maintaining a traditional character that still captivates visitors today. Nowadays, the enchanting scenery of Vámos consists of stone-built houses, small cafés, charming cobbled streets, and squares shaded by large plane trees. Great efforts have been made to highlight the village's historical and cultural significance. Many houses have been carefully restored, preserving their elegance and charm, and some have been transformed into guesthouses that blend traditional decor with modern comforts. Vámos is a semi-mountainous settlement built on a hill, offering stunning views of the White Mountains. It is located approximately 10 kilometers from the sea. In addition to its cultural appeal, the village is also a starting point for hiking trails across the surrounding hills, where visitors can explore the area's rich flora and fauna.
