Naples is built in a beautiful bay, in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius. It is the city of pizza, Maradona, and Sophia Loren. It is the third-largest city in Italy, the largest port in Southern Italy, with a population of about one million. Founded as Neapolis in the 6th century BC (Neapolis = New City in Greek), it is considered one of the oldest cities in the world, with findings dating back to the 3rd millennium BC. In the 9th century BC, it was a colony of the inhabitants of Cumae in Euboea, named Palepolis. It was conquered by the Romans in 320 BC but retained its Greek cultural and linguistic elements. Later, it came under the control of the Byzantines, was besieged by the Lombards (a Germanic people) and Saracen pirates, and was passed through by the Normans, Swabians, Angevins, and many others. As a result of all these influences, Naples became a major maritime city and one of the strongest in the Italian Peninsula. The Spaniards, who followed in the later years, left a significant imprint on the city. Its strategic location made it a coveted prize, and many kings sought to rule it. The city's rulers alternated (French, Spanish, Austrians) until 1860, when it was conquered by Giuseppe Garibaldi and annexed to the Kingdom of Italy. All those who passed through Naples may be the reason for what it is today, as their influence has been decisive. The vibrancy of its streets and people is unique and is due to its long history of over 3,000 years. Naples is a city with a vast artistic and archaeological heritage. It is home to countless works of art, numerous squares, and impressive sites to visit. The National Archaeological Museum is one of the best in Europe, with a large collection of Greek and Roman antiquities. The city also boasts many churches, real works of art, with the most important being the Cathedral dedicated to San Gennaro, the patron saint of the city, also known as the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Many churches are built on catacombs, which are worth visiting. Naples also has beautiful castles, the most famous being the Castel Nuovo and the Castel dell'Ovo. The city's squares, especially Piazza Bellini, Piazza del Gesù, and Piazza San Domenico Maggiore, are always full of people, especially on Saturday nights, as Naples is famous for its nightlife. The Neapolitan pizza, a symbol of the city, the sfogliatelle that accompany coffee, pasta with the most authentic dish, pasta alla genovese, and the seafood make the city even more delightful and magical. To discover the Neapolitan atmosphere, the historic center area is ideal, as it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. Every year, its narrow streets are flooded with millions of tourists who visit to admire its natural beauty and monuments.
