The Virgin Mary of Faneromeni is the patron saint and protector of the island, and the monastery celebrates its feast day on Pentecost Monday. The monastery is a male one, with an abbot and four monks, and is located 3 kilometers from the city of Lefkada. It is built on a hill just outside the village of Fryni, offering a breathtaking view of the lagoon, the beaches of Agios Ioannis, Gyra, and the city itself. Tradition says that on the site where the monastery stands, there was the Callimarmaro Temple of the goddess Artemis. It is the oldest monastery on the island and is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. This location is where the first church of the island was established when the helpers of the Apostle Paul Aquila, Sosipater, and Herodion preached the teachings of Jesus upon his command. According to tradition, the monastery is named "Faneromeni" because, in the 5th century AD, when the icon of the Virgin Mary was commissioned in Constantinople, it was miraculously revealed to the iconographer Callistos, appearing drawn on wood, and he only completed the colors. Over the centuries, the monastery has suffered numerous destructions, and it took its present form during the Venetian rule(1684-1797). In 1887, the church was rebuilt due to a fire, and the new icon of the Virgin Mary is a replica of the old one, which was created on Mount Athos. The monastery houses an ecclesiastical museum, which was established in 2006. It showcases relics from the monastery and other older, inactive monasteries on the island, as well as from various churches. The collection includes portable icons, parts of iconostases, numerous ecclesiastical manuscripts, vestments, and episcopal robes. The monastery also features a small botanical garden and a small zoo with birds and small animals, creating a little paradise.
