Karya is one of the most beautiful and traditional mountain villages in Lefkada, built at an altitude of around 500 meters on Mount Elati, in the heart of the island. Located approximately 15 km from the town of Lefkada, the village is surrounded by dense vegetation, olive groves, and walnut trees from which it takes its name. The village is renowned for its traditional architecture, cobbled streets, and its charming main square shaded by centuries-old plane trees. Around the square, you'll find cozy cafés and tavernas serving delicious local dishes. Karya has a long-standing tradition in folk art and weaving, especially the famous Karsanika embroideries, known for their intricate and detailed craftsmanship. These represent a valuable part of the region’s cultural heritage. In fact, a dedicated embroidery school was founded here in 1912 to preserve and promote the craft. The village is also home to a Folklore Museum, where visitors can learn about the local way of life, traditional tools, and artistic expression. Points of interest include several old churches, such as the Church of Saint Spyridon, and the surrounding natural landscape offers excellent opportunities for walking and hiking along nearby trails. Karya retains its strong traditional character and hosts cultural events throughout the summer, attracting visitors who are looking for an authentic experience of Lefkada’s mountainous interior, away from the busy coastal resorts. It is an ideal destination for peaceful holidays, nature exploration, and discovering the island’s cultural roots. Don’t miss the chance to enjoy a coffee under the ancient plane trees in the central square or to taste the local cuisine at one of the tavernas. For lovers of tradition, the village hosts the famous “Traditional Village Wedding” reenactment every August a beloved cultural event that draws crowds of visitors each year.
