Ano Tholos is an almost abandoned semi-mountainous village in the Regional Unit of Drama, administratively belonging to the Municipality of Paranesti. It lies north of Paranesti at an altitude of about 172 m, just 5 km NNE of Paranesti, 44 km NE of Drama, and 52 km NW of Xanthi. To the west of the village flows the Arkoudorema stream, a tributary of the Nestos River. During the Ottoman period, the village was known as Karadzha Köy, a Turkish name meaning “Black Village” (kara = black, köy = village). After the population exchange of 1923, 62 refugee families (227 people) from Eastern Thrace, Pontus, and Asia Minor settled here. By the late 1980s, most inhabitants had left; today only a few livestock farmers remain. According to the 2021 census, Ano Tholos recorded 0 permanent residents (while the wider Tholos community, including Kato Tholos, Krini, etc., counted 119). The village preserves two- and three-storey stone houses still in relatively good condition, as well as its old school. At its center stands the church of Agios Georgios (St. George), which celebrates its feast on April 23. Every year, on the first Sunday after August 15, the “Ano Tholiotiko Antamoma” is held here: a festive reunion with music, dancing, and communal celebration around the church grounds. Built on a gentle slope covered in wild vegetation where free-ranging cattle still roam the village retains a unique rural charm. The wider path leading to the chapel of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary is popular for hiking, offering lush green trails and magnificent views of the surrounding nature.
