The Konnos – Cyclops Cave Nature Trail is located in the Famagusta district of Cyprus and stretches 2.4 kilometers. It starts from Konnos Beach and ends at the so-called Cyclops Cave, a route that takes about one hour to complete. Following the path along the sea, visitors are rewarded with the natural beauty of the area. The site is popular for swimming and is of great interest to diving enthusiasts. The Cyclops Cave is situated approximately 15 meters above sea level. It is a majestic cave covering more than 100 square meters, with two large entrances one of which is hidden by dense vegetation and accessible only to the adventurous. The cave’s height varies: in some areas, visitors can walk comfortably, while in others the ceiling is quite low. The cave’s history is rich, with signs of habitation dating back to the pre-Neolithic era. The cave’s name originates from mythology, which tells of a family of Cyclopes who shipwrecked on the island after a storm. Cyclopes were humanoid mythical giants with a single eye in the middle of their forehead. Of Thracian origin, they were renowned builders credited with constructing enormous walls during the Mycenaean period, which bore their name. After many wars, the Cyclopes were forced to leave their homeland and settle in other regions such as Crete and Lycia. Ancient quarries are found near the cave, possibly worked by this pioneering family of Cyclopes. Before the tourist development of the Protaras area, this region was quite remote and known only to local residents. According to reports from around 1920, the cave was used by locals to hide a Cypriot fugitive from Xylofagou from the British colonial authorities, later helping him leave Cyprus. During the Cypriot National Liberation Struggle (1955–59), the cave served as a refuge for EOKA fighters. Various testimonies suggest that the then deputy leader and sector chief of EOKA, Grigoris Afxentiou, was found in the cave, reportedly asking a local shepherd for water and bread. In exchange, he offered the shepherd his watch, which the shepherd refused upon learning the identity of the man he was helping. The cave was also used as shelter by shepherds during harsh weather conditions in the surrounding area.http://www.exodos.com.cy/el-gr/excursions/nature-trails/famagusta/konnos-agioi-anargyroi-(linear)-nature-trail/
