Agios Dometios is a suburb located to the west of Nicosia, covering an area of approximately 12 square kilometers. A large part of Agios Dometios, to the north and west, has been under Turkish military occupation since 1974. Older sources mention that it was a village located two kilometers from Nicosia, with two churches: one dedicated to Saint George and the other to Saint Dometios, along with a small chapel dedicated to Saint Paul. The village is mentioned since the period of the Frankish rule. The name of the village is derived from Saint Dometios. Since there are three saints named Dometios and four martyrs with the same name, it is unclear which Saint Dometios gave his name to the village. The commemorated saint today is Saint Dometios the Persian, who was martyred around 362 AD, and his feast is celebrated on August 7th.
Although the village may have taken its name from Saint Dometios, its main church is dedicated to Saint George, which was built in 1902. It is a stone-built church of a much newer construction, in Byzantine style but with Gothic characteristics.
The small church of Saint Dometios is built on a hilltop made of rocks. The church dates back to the Franko-Byzantine period, featuring a single-aisled design with a hemispherical dome. It is constructed with small squared stones. The church has two doors, with the main entrance on the western side and another on the northern side. The western door ends in an arch, a characteristic found in Gothic-style churches. The wooden iconostasis was constructed in 1850, and from a damaged inscription preserved on it, we learn that it was gilded during the time when Archbishop Makarios I (1854-1856) held office.
In Agios Dometios, there is the Agios Dometios checkpoint, which opened in 2004 and serves as the access point to the occupied part of Cyprus.
