A landmark of the city of Drama is the Agia Varvara Park, which has been included in the 60 most beautiful parks in Europe as part of the Culture 2000 program. The park spans an area of 60 acres in the heart of the city and is named after the church of Agia Varvara, located within it. According to tradition, when the Ottoman conquerors attempted to demolish the church to build a mosque in its place, the church was covered by water and thus saved. The locals believed this to be a miracle, and for this reason, to this day, they honor the memory of St. Barbara on December 4th by lighting candles on makeshift little boats that float on the lake, creating a stunning scene. Today, hundreds of visitors come daily to the park to enjoy the tranquility offered by the beautiful landscape, made up of ancient trees, rivers, lakes, and wooden bridges, as well as the sight of ducks, geese, and swans that live in the park.
