The hiking route from the enchanting alpine Verliga Dragon Lake to the summit of Tsoukarela (2,295 m) offers a thrilling experience in the heart of the Pindus mountain range. It’s a demanding yet relatively short ascent that brings you into direct contact with the alpine landscape of the Aspropotamos region. Verliga, a circular alpine lake that forms impressive patterns of small streams and ponds, lies at an altitude of approximately 2,050 meters, at the base of the Lakmos mountain complex (which connects the regions of Pertouli, Tzoumerka, and the Athamanika Mountains). From this point, the trail begins toward Tsoukarela, the second highest peak of Mount Lakmos. The trail follows the western arc around the lake, starting with a gentle, continuous incline. Soon, the landscape becomes more rocky and open, with sweeping views of the surrounding mountain range. Hikers encounter smooth rock slabs, low alpine shrubs, and breathtaking vistas toward both Epirus and the Thessalian side of the Pindus. Although the hike is short (about 1–1.5 hours from Verliga to the summit), it requires good physical condition due to the elevation gain and exposed terrain. Upon reaching the top, you’re rewarded with scenes of incredible natural beauty. From the summit of Tsoukarela, the panoramic view is simply stunning: the entire Pindus range stretches before youTzoumerka, Peristeri, Smolikas, and, on clear days, even Mount Olympus and the Agrafa mountains. If the view from the Verliga basin is fantastic, what unfolds from the summit is beyond words: dozens of ridgelines, countless conical peaks, deep ravines, vast alpine meadows, and steep cliffs cover the immense expanse of the Pindus mountains. All this unfolds around and below you. From up here, everything looks so small Ioannina with Lake Pamvotis, the Egnatia Odos highway with the Arachthos bridge, and even Verliga itself. This breathtaking beauty fills you with profound emotion. You don’t want to leave and once you do, you’ll surely want to return.
