Κουμ-Καπί ή αλλιώς "Πύλη της Άμμου" ονομάζεται η περιοχή έξω από την ανατολική πλευρά του παλαιού τείχους των Χανίων. Αρχικά οι Ενετοί κατά την διάρκεια του 16ου αι. χτίζουν στα παραθαλάσσια τείχη μία πύλη, την πύλη Σαμπιονάρα (Sabionera) δίνοντας την ονομασία αυτή λόγω της αμμώδους παραλίας. Καθώς όμως η πύλη καταστρέφεται το 1645 από την πολιορκία των Τούρκων, ανοικοδομήθηκε και πάλι σε μικρότερες διαστάσεις και επικράτησε η τούρκικη ονομασία Κουμ-Καπί (πύλη της Άμμου). Σήμερα αποτελεί σημαντικό μέρος της νυχτερινής ζωής της πόλης. Όμως η γραφική αυτή περιοχή που βρίσκεται ανάμεσα στην Παλιά Πόλη των Χανίων και την συνοικία Χαλέπα, κρύβει την δική της ιστορία. Η περιοχή ήταν γνωστή από την Πύλη Sabionera και τον προμαχώνα Mocenigo και την όμορφη παραλία που τα πλαισιώνει. Κατά την διάρκεια της Οθωμανικής κατοχής στην περιοχή επικρατεί το όνομα Kum-Kapisi, χωρίς όμως να είναι η γραφική και όμορφη συνοικία που συναντάμε σήμερα. Τον 19ο άι υπήρχε ο οικισμός των Χαλικούτηδων (Halikoutes), οι κάτοικοι του αποτελούνταν από Βεδουίνους της Βόρειας Αφρικής που μεταφέρθηκαν στο νησί ως εργάτες και αχθοφόροι του λιμανιού, χωρίς βέβαια να υπάρχει οργανωμένη ανοικοδόμηση. Αυτό μέχρι το 1913 που με τη Ένωση της Κρήτης με την Ελλάδα και την ανταλλαγή πληθυσμών, οι Βεδουίνοι επέστρεψαν στην Βόρεια Αφρική. Στα χρόνια που ακολουθούν έγιναν προσπάθειες για να βελτιωθούν οι συνθήκες διαβίωσης και υγιεινής. Την μορφή που βλέπουμε σήμερα την πήρε μετά το 1924 όταν Έλληνες από την Μικρά Ασία ήρθαν να ζήσουν εδώ. Σήμερα προσελκύει χιλιάδες επισκέπτες που έρχονται να χαλαρώσουν, να φάνε και να διασκεδάσουν. Στο μήκος της προκυμαίας υπάρχουν καφέ, μπαρ, ταβέρνες με υπέροχη θέα στην θάλασσα και ενός τμήματος των Ενετικών τειχών. Αξίζει μια επίσκεψη, είναι άλλωστε αρκετά κοντά από την Παλιά Πόλη ώστε περπατώντας και ακολουθώντας την θάλασσα φτάνετε από το ένα μέρος στο άλλο.

Koum Kapi, also known as the "Gate of Sand," is the area located just outside the eastern side of the old Venetian walls of Chania. Originally, in the 16th century, the Venetians built a gate along the seaside fortifications, known as the Sabionera Gate (Porta Sabbionara), named after the sandy beach in the area. However, after the gate was destroyed during the Ottoman siege in 1645, it was rebuilt on a smaller scale, and the Turkish name Koum Kapi (meaning Gate of Sand) eventually prevailed. Today, it is a significant part of Chania’s nightlife, but this picturesque neighborhood nestled between the Old Town and the district of Halepa holds a fascinating history. The area was known for the Sabionera Gate, the Mocenigo Bastion, and the beautiful beach that surrounds them. During the Ottoman occupation, the name Kum Kapisi became widespread, but the neighborhood at that time was far from the charming place we see today. In the 19th century, the area was home to the Halikoutes, a settlement of Bedouins from North Africa, brought to the island as porters and laborers. The community lacked any organized urban structure. This changed in 1913, with the unification of Crete with Greece and the population exchange, after which the Bedouins returned to North Africa. In the years that followed, efforts were made to improve the living conditions and public health in the area. The neighborhood took on its current form after 1924, when Greek refugees from Asia Minor settled in Koum Kapi, bringing with them their culture and traditions. Today, it attracts thousands of visitors who come to relax, eat, and enjoy the seaside atmosphere. Along the promenade, there are numerous cafés, bars, and tavernas, offering beautiful views of the sea and the remnants of the Venetian walls. It is well worth a visit and since it’s located so close to the Old Town, you can easily reach it on foot by following the coastline.
