Το Bergamo Alto είναι χτισμένο ψηλά στην κορυφή ενός λόφου, είναι μια μεσαιωνική συνοικία, γεμάτη αναγεννησιακά κτίρια. Με σημαντική στρατηγική θέση, κατοικήθηκε από τους Λίγυρες  το 1200π.Χ., αργότερα από τους Κέλτες το 500π.Χ. που την ονόμασαν Μπέργκαϊμ ή Μπέργκεμ, που σημαίνει ακρόπολη. Στην συνέχεια οι Ρωμαίοι της έδωσαν την ονομασία Μπέργκομουμ. Μεγάλο μέρος του καλλιτεχνικού πλούτου, αλλά και η αρχιτεκτονική της οφείλεται στην επιρροή της Βενετίας που από τον 15ο έως τον 18ο άι. ήταν υπό τον έλεγχο της. Τα τείχη που περιβάλουν την Παλιά Πόλη και αποτελούν Μνημείο Παγκόσμιας Κληρονομιάς της UNESCO, κτίστηκαν από τους Βενετούς. Με την Porta San Giacomo και την Porta Sant' Agostino, οι δύο εντυπωσιακοί είσοδοι, οδηγούν στο ιστορικό κέντρο του Bergamo. Πραγματικό κόσμημα οι δύο κεντρικές πλατείες στην καρδιά της πόλης, η Piazza Vecchia, που θεωρείται η πιο όμορφη πλατεία της Ευρώπης και η Piazza del Duomo. Στην Piazza Vecchia συναντάμε ένα από τα εντυπωσιακότερα αρχιτεκτονικά συγκροτήματα της περιοχής, όπως το Palazzo Della Ragione, ένα από τα παλαιότερα δημοτικά μέγαρα της Ιταλίας (1199). Τον Campanone o Torre Civica (12oς άι.), με πανοραμική θέα ολόκληρης της πόλης και με ρολόι καμπάνα που χτυπάει κάθε  βράδυ στις δέκα, για να υπενθυμίσει ότι οι πόρτες εισόδου θα κλείσουν και την Δημοτική βιβλιοθήκη, Civica Biblioteca Angelo Mai, του 16ου άι.. Στην Piazza de Duomo, την πλατεία του καθεδρικού ναού δεσπόζει η Cappella Colleoni, το παρεκκλήσι αυτό θεωρείται αριστούργημα αρχιτεκτονικής της πρώιμης Αναγέννησης. Χτίστηκε το 1476, για να στεγάσει τον τάφο του Bartolomeo Colleoni, διάσημος κοντοτιέρος που κατάγονταν από την περιοχή. Δίπλα βρίσκεται το οκταγωνικό Βαπτιστήριο (Battistero, 1340) και η Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore (Αγία Μαρία της Μεγαλυτέρας, 1137). Επίσης μεγάλο ενδιαφέρον έχουν και οι εκκλησίες: Chiesa di San Michele al Pozzo Bianco (7oς άι.), με τις μεσαιωνικές τοιχογραφίες, η εκκλησία του Sant' Agostino καθώς και το φρούριο Rocca (14ος άι.). Είναι μια φανταστική πόλη, βγαλμένη λες από παραμύθι. Χάνεσαι μέσα στα στενά σοκάκια, έχεις την αίσθηση ότι ταξιδεύεις στο χρόνο και βρίσκεσαι κάπου στο  μεσαίωνα ή την αναγέννηση. Είναι αριστοκρατική και μεσαιωνική σε σχέση με την Citta Bassa (κάτω πόλη), που η θέα της από εδώ πάνω είναι υπέροχη. Στα στενά λιθόστρωτα δρομάκια βρίσκεις όμορφα καλόγουστα και γραφικά  μαγαζιά, εστιατόρια, μπαράκια. Είναι μια φανταστική πόλη, ρομαντική, γραφική μέσα στην πόλη του Bergamo.

Bergamo Alto, perched on top of a hill, is a medieval district brimming with Renaissance buildings. With a significant strategic location, it was first settled by the Ligurians in 1200 BC, followed by the Celts around 500 BC, who named it Bergaim or Bergem, meaning "acropolis." Later, the Romans renamed it Bergomum. Much of its artistic wealth and architecture owe their influence to Venice, which controlled the area from the 15th to the 18th centuries. The walls surrounding the Old Town, which are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, were built by the Venetians. The two impressive gates, Porta San Giacomo and Porta Sant' Agostino, lead into the historic center of Bergamo. True gems are the two central squares in the heart of the city: Piazza Vecchia, considered the most beautiful square in Europe, and Piazza del Duomo. In Piazza Vecchia, you'll find one of the most striking architectural complexes in the area, including the Palazzo Della Ragione, one of Italy's oldest municipal buildings (1199). The Campanone or Torre Civica (12th century) offers panoramic views of the entire city and features a bell that rings every evening at 10 o'clock, signaling the closure of the city gates. Also, the Civica Biblioteca Angelo Mai, the public library dating back to the 16th century, is located here. In Piazza del Duomo, the square surrounding the cathedral, the Cappella Colleoni stands out. This chapel is considered a masterpiece of early Renaissance architecture, built in 1476 to house the tomb of Bartolomeo Colleoni, a famous condottiero from the region. Nearby is the octagonal Baptistery (Battistero, 1340) and the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore (St. Mary Major, 1137). Also noteworthy are the churches: Chiesa di San Michele al Pozzo Bianco (7th century) with its medieval frescoes, the church of Sant' Agostino, and the Rocca fortress (14th century). Bergamo Alto is truly a fairy-tale city, with its narrow alleys that give the impression of traveling back in time, as if you were in the Middle Ages or the Renaissance. It feels aristocratic and medieval in comparison to Citta Bassa (the lower city), which can be admired from above. The cobblestone streets are lined with charming, stylish shops, restaurants, and bars. It is a romantic and picturesque place, making it a fantastic part of the city to explore.
