The Samaria Gorge is one of the most spectacular natural landscapes in Greece and Europe a true paradise of natural beauty and unspoiled wilderness. It lies within the Omalos Plateau, part of the White Mountains (Lefka Ori), which span an area of 25 km² and feature rugged peaks reaching altitudes of up to 2,500 meters. On the southern edge of the plateau, at a location called Xyloskalo, lies the entrance to Europe’s longest gorge, stretching 15 kilometers in length and varying in width from 3 to 150 meters. The gorge is the most famous in Crete, named after the now-abandoned village of Samaria, which lies deep within it. Hikers and nature lovers flock to it especially in the summer months to cross it and reach the remote coastal village of Agia Roumeli, on the Libyan Sea. In 1962, the Samaria Gorge was declared a National Park, to protect its rich and diverse flora and fauna. The hike is a breathtaking journey through steep cliffs, pine forests, towering cypress trees, and alongside a rushing stream, which is also the reason the gorge is only open from May to October. The full trek takes about 6 hours, depending on one's physical condition. Roughly halfway through, hikers reach the abandoned village of Samaria, named after the 14th-century Byzantine chapel of Osia Maria of Egypt from which the name "Samaria" is derived. Here you'll find a ranger station, a first aid post, and even a helipad for emergencies. At the end of the gorge, hikers arrive at the old abandoned village of Agia Roumeli, now a peaceful stop by the sea. Hiking the Samaria Gorge is a rejuvenating experience an opportunity to connect with nature and explore the remote and wild side of Crete. The dramatic cliffs, the serene forest paths, and the sheer natural beauty of the area make it feel like a natural cathedral carved by time. The most awe-inspiring point of the hike is known as the “Samaria Gates” or “Iron Gates”, where vertical rock walls rise 300 meters high, narrowing the gorge to just 3–3.5 meters wide. It is truly a priceless experience, as the contact with such untamed natural beauty evokes emotions that are both rare and unforgettable.
