Απέναντι από τη Βαλέτα βρίσκονται οι Τρείς Πόλεις Birgu - Cospicua - Sengles. Η Birgu που στα μαλτέζικα λέγεται Il Birgu και στα ιταλικά Vittoriosa είναι γνωστή και ως Citta Vittoriosa που σημαίνει "Νικήτρια Πόλη". Civitas Vittoriosa, την ονόμασε ο Μεγάλος Μαγίστρος Λα Βαλέτ, λόγω της μεγάλης στρατηγικής θέσης της και της προσφοράς της στην άμυνα του νησιού στη μεγάλη μάχη του 1565 με τους Οθωμανούς. Στην Birgu έφτασε το 1530 το τάγμα του Αγίου Ιωάννη όταν εκδιώχθηκε από την Ρόδο, ήταν τότε μία μικρή πόλη ανυπεράσπιστη και σε κακή κατάσταση, όμως η τότε πρωτεύουσα της Μάλτας, Μντίνα, δε πληρούσε τις στρατιωτικές απαιτήσεις του τάγματος. Επιλέγεται η Birgu λόγω τοποθεσίας για την κατασκευή του κάστρου του St. Angelo και μια σειρά από μεγάλα οχυρωματικά έργα. Η πόλη καταλαμβάνει το ακρωτήριο με το φρούριο να δεσπόζει στο ύψωμα και τη πόλη Cospicua στη βάση της. Η πραγματική ομορφιά βρίσκεται στα δαιδαλώδη δρομάκια της. Περπατώντας στα γραφικά στενά στη μαρίνα με τα καφέ και τα εστιατόρια ανακαλύπτεις την πόλη με τα πανέμορφα σπίτια και τα σημαντικά μνημεία της. Το οχυρό St. Angelo βρίσκεται στη μέση του λιμανιού, χτίστηκε τον Μεσαίωνα και ονομάστηκε Castrum Maris. Ξαναχτίστηκε από το τάγμα του Αγίου Ιωάννη, μεταξύ του 1530 και του 1560 και ονομάστηκε Fort Saint Angelo. Την τωρινή του μορφή την πήρε μετά από ανακατασκευή που έγινε 1690. Η εκκλησία του St. Lawrence που κάποτε ήταν η εκκλησία των Ιπποτών, αφιερωμένη στον Άγιο Λαυρέντιο της Ρώμης, χτίστηκε τον 19ο αιώνα. Το ανάκτορο του Ιεροεξεταστή, η έδρα της Ιεράς Εξέτασης της Μάλτας για 200 χρόνια, το Ναυτικό Μουσείο της Μάλτας και τόσα άλλα σημαντικά και αξιόλογα. Είναι η Πόλη των Ιπποτών και τον Αριστοκρατών, κάτι που φαίνεται από τα κτήρια και τις επιγραφές. Η επίσκεψη εδώ σε μεταφέρει σε έναν άλλο κόσμο μακρινό και πολύ διαφορετικό αλλά που μπορεί και συνυπάρχει με το παρόν.

Opposite Valletta lie the Three Cities: Birgu, Cospicua, and Senglea. Birgu, known as Il Birgu in Maltese and Vittoriosa in Italian, is also referred to as Città Vittoriosa, meaning "Victorious City." The Grand Master La Valette named it Civitas Vittoriosa due to its strategic importance and its significant contribution to the island’s defense during the great battle of 1565 against the Ottomans. In 1530, the Order of St. John arrived in Birgu after being expelled from Rhodes. At that time, it was a small, defenseless town in poor condition. However, the capital of Malta, Mdina, did not meet the military needs of the Order, so Birgu was chosen due to its location to build the St. Angelo Castle and a series of extensive fortifications. The town occupies a promontory, with the fortress towering on the hill and the town of Cospicua lying at its base. The real beauty of Birgu lies in its winding alleys. Walking through the picturesque narrow streets by the marina, lined with cafés and restaurants, you can discover the city’s beautiful houses and important monuments. The St. Angelo Fort, located in the middle of the harbor, was built in the Middle Ages and initially called Castrum Maris. It was rebuilt by the Knights of St. John between 1530 and 1560 and renamed Fort Saint Angelo. The fort’s current form was given to it after a reconstruction in 1690. The St. Lawrence Church, which once served as the church for the Knights and is dedicated to St. Lawrence of Rome, was built in the 19th century. Other significant landmarks include the Inquisitor’s Palace, which served as the headquarters of the Inquisition in Malta for 200 years, the National Maritime Museum, and many more remarkable sites. Birgu is known as the City of the Knights and Aristocrats, evident from its buildings and inscriptions. A visit here transports you to a distant, different world, one that still coexists with the present day.
