The Monastery of Saint George of Kremna is built on a steep coastline in the area of Kremna(Gkremna), within a pine forest. It is located 30 kilometers from the city of Zakynthos, just after the Anafonitria Monastery. The monastery was founded in 1535 by Hieromonk Makarios and Monk Varlaam Beleti. Throughout its history, it is recorded that many significant ecclesiastical figures practiced here. Among them were the Zakynthian theologian and teacher of the nation, Monk Pachomios Roussanos(1508-1553), as well as Hieromonk Gerasimos Notaras (later Saint Gerasimos, the patron saint of Kefalonia). In 1606, the monastery was decorated with frescoes by Loukas Romano, which, however, no longer exist. In the courtyard, there is a prominent tower built in 1561 for the protection of the monks from pirates. Although Zakynthos has many ecclesiastical monuments, the most important of them all is the Monastery of Saint George in Kremna. Since its establishment in the 15th century, it may have been destroyed by pirates and strong earthquakes, but it has managed to survive until today. Following the initiative of Metropolitan Chrysostomos, the monastery was rebuilt, conservation works were carried out, and it is now staffed by three monks.
