Panagia Skopiotissa is a historic and picturesque chapel located at the summit of Mount Skopos in Zakynthos. It dates back to the 15th century and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, being one of the oldest churches on the island after the Venetian period. It is built on the ruins of an ancient temple of Artemis, combining Christian faith with remnants of antiquity. The old monastery was built in 1624, in Byzantine style, with the shape of an isosceles cross, featuring a large dome and chapels. After the earthquakes in 1953, the church was severely damaged but was restored by the state in 1962. The first monastery, founded in the 15th century, was granted to the noble family of Logothetis, which still owns it today. The church is built at an altitude of about 500 meters and offers a stunning panoramic view of the Ionian Sea, Zakynthos, and the Laganas Gulf. Due to its location, it served not only as a place of worship but also as a strategic lookout, with visibility over a large part of the island. The area has been declared an archaeological site, and the church is a listed Byzantine monument. The ascent to the top of the hill is somewhat difficult, with a steep climb and a challenging dirt road, but the view from up there is impressive sea, vegetation, and villages spread out as far as the eye can see. Panagia Skopiotissa is considered the protector of the island, and on August 15th, it is honored with a grand procession. The name "Skopiotissa" comes from the word "Skopos," meaning "watchtower" or "lookout," highlighting the importance of the location as a natural vantage point. The church is a favorite destination for pilgrims, hikers, and travelers seeking peace, history, and breathtaking views. The feast of Panagia Skopiotissa is celebrated every year on August 15th, attracting many faithful and visitors with religious ceremonies and local festivities.
