Platanovrysi has been known since the time of the Ottoman Empire under the name Platani (or Platania). In 1927, it was renamed to Platanovrysi. After the Asia Minor Catastrophe, refugees from Asia Minor, Thrace, and Pontus settled in the village, bringing with them their traditions and culture. Platanovrysi is a small settlement in the regional unit of Drama, belonging to the Municipality of Doxato, and is located about 18 km south of the city of Drama. It is built in an area of rich vegetation, at an altitude of approximately 120 meters, and is an ideal destination for nature lovers, hikers, and those interested in the region’s history. The natural environment is particularly lush, with plane trees, clear springs, and streams, offering opportunities for hiking, relaxation, and photography. According to the 2021 census, the permanent population is 38 residents, showing a decline compared to previous decades. The village church is dedicated to Saint Demetrios, and the feast day is celebrated on October 26. Every summer, traditional cultural events are organized by the village’s Cultural Association. The residents are mainly engaged in agriculture, livestock farming, beekeeping, and logging.
