The Acropolis of Platanias, near the village of the same name in the Regional Unit of Drama (Municipality of Paranesti), is an ancient fortified settlement with an elliptical layout, built on a hill known as Kales or simply Acropolis. It is located about 5 km east/northeast of the village of Platanias, at an altitude of approximately 665 meters. The village of Platanias itself lies on the slope of the Lekani mountain range, around 25 km from the city of Drama. The site was inhabited from the Neolithic period up to the 6th century AD, revealing finds from the prehistoric, Thracian, Roman, and Byzantine eras. Excavations conducted in the autumn of 2009, lasting three months, uncovered defensive walls, an entrance on the western side, rooms, pathways, and a large number of artifacts(coins, pottery sherds, jewelry, tools, etc.). The walled area has an elliptical shape with a perimeter of around 290 meters. The fortification wall, built on natural rock, has a width of 2.3–2.5 meters. The site likely functioned as a beacon post (fryktoria) within a network of acropolises along the valley, transmitting signals to the Acropolis of Philippi An architectural study for the protection, restoration, and promotion of the acropolis has been approved by the Ministry of Culture and the Ephorate of Antiquities of Drama. The plan includes vegetation clearing, mapping, structural reinforcements, the creation of a walking path for visitor access, and the installation of informational signage. Cultural events are occasionally organized at the site, such as full moon observations(e.g., on August 17th), under the auspices of the Ephorate of Antiquities and local associations. This site is well worth a visit, offering over 3,500 years of historical continuity, strong archaeological evidence of successive habitation phases from prehistory to Byzantium, and strategic importance as part of a fortified network controlling the valley and linking the inland to the sea. It also offers panoramic views of the Philippi valley, making it an ideal destination for photography and hiking.
